San Mateo, California and Toyonaka, Japan became sister cities in 1963, part of the People to People movement started by President Eisenhower to build friendship between nations one community at a time. The San Mateo Sister City Association was formed to promote good relations, educate, and build bonds between our two cultures, starting with our youth.
Since then, hundreds of young players, students, musicians, host families and volunteers have crossed the Pacific in both directions through our baseball, softball, band and high school ambassador exchanges.
The Sister City Association is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by the San Mateo City Council and our community.
